I love the lengthening shades of day, as autumn brushes summer away.
~ Anne Pollock

I’m in conflict about the seasons changing. I love fall, but I’m so sad to see summer end.
I feel like summer went by far too quickly. Doesn’t it seem like I was just publishing my umpteenth post complaining about winter and feeling like I was encrusted in ice? It does to me. And here we are, heading back into the cold-weather season.
Maybe it’s more that I’m resistant to change at the moment. I’ve had far too many unpleasant changes in my life lately and I think I’m pretty much over it. So much so that perhaps even the change of seasons feels like an annoying betrayal.
Like…..you too, summer?

So today I was feeling contrary. It was just over 70 degrees, so…..shorts! But it was also chilly, so…..sweatshirt. I was still perfectly happy to make an afternoon visit to King Kone for ice cream, but I’m also craving hearty soups that warm you from the inside out on cool evenings. And I was also happily taking pictures of fall foliage at a local farm.
I had one foot planted firmly in summer and the other dipping a toe into fall.

Early fall is a beautiful and underrated time of year. Everyone waits for the peak fall colors as they ramble through pumpkin patches and apple orchards. But in waiting for what’s to come, maybe some miss the beautiful waning of summer, when the light is golden, the air is cooler while still retaining that welcome bit of warmth, and the sunsets still set the sky on fire in that certain way you only get when summer turns to fall.
These are my favorite kind of days.
