It’s time for a photo gallery refresh and shelving my Autumn gallery is long overdue. In its place is my new Light & Shadows gallery—a collection of photos that I took specifically because I was drawn to the way the light fell or illuminated the scene or subject. I love how light and shadow work in contrast to soften a surface, create texture and make the ordinary glow with an ethereal shimmer.
This is a sampling of my new Light & Shadows gallery along with the inspiration behind each photo….

I took this photo a couple of years ago in mid-November. I was walking with my dog Maggie on one of our favorite trails at Cliffdale Farm, which is part of the Teatown Lake Reservation. We were heading up the path when I happened to turn around and saw this dreamy, misty scene. I was struck by the “enchanted forest” vibe created by the morning sunlight streaming through the mist, casting long shadows across the path.

I took this photo at work one busy morning about seven years ago. I remember turning the corner to cross to the other side of the unit—and just stopping, struck by how beautiful the early morning light looked—streaming through a window, casting across the floor and spraying softly across the wall. I loved how “frozen in time” the moment felt. The chair down the hall is turned slightly, as if someone just stood up and walked away, and the computer cart stands alone beside the doorway. Both details give the sense that someone just stepped out of the frame and time paused—but at the same time, the light makes the photo feel alive.

This water photo was taken at sunset last summer on one of my walks along the Hudson River. I loved the way the fading light played across the rippling water, creating shifting colors, textures and that sense of movement.
Different shades of blue and grey ripple through the frame, with rougher textures in the background that remind me of static, and a velvety pocket of deep blue in the foreground that makes me want to reach in and run my hand across it.
