Today’s topic? Sourdough!
I’ve always loved to mess around in the kitchen. Cooking and baking has always been my thing. I got into sourdough about three years ago. It was a fun challenge, and I wanted to be able to make those amazing-looking golden, crusty, artisan loaves. It took a lot of trial and error and experimenting, but after a few tries, I managed to produce a decent loaf of sourdough bread – and it’s only gotten better from there.
Sourdough has its own rewards. The tactile satisfaction of working the dough – stretching and folding to help build up the gluten network, shaping it just so, with enough tension to get a good rise in the oven – is incredibly satisfying.
The best part is the bake! Sourdough is often baked in a Dutch oven. When the time is up and I lift the lid of my Dutch oven and see that my pale blob of dough has turned into golden, crispy, puffy perfection – it’s like opening a present on Christmas morning! The big reveal of a baked sourdough definitely delivers a lovely dose of bakers dopamine.
Pictured below is today’s bake. Nothing fancy – just classic plain sourdough begging to be sliced and slathered with Irish butter!
